The Scourge of Plastic Bags

Just read this article on The Register. It’s pretty obscene the amount of plastic bags that are used once, then thrown away. I noticed in NZ and Oz that quite a lot of people were carrying around green shopping bags – bags for life.

I hope you’re not using plastic bags anymore? Maybe get some nice hemp ones.

I do usually carry a shopping bag with me (and a very large handbag which fits most things!), but I’m unhappy about the way plastic bags are suddenly “evil” by default. I use carrier bags for all sorts of things, lining waste paper bins, taking out cat litter, crocheting into other things, putting wet gym towels in and so on … will I now have to buy plastic bags on a roll to do with these things? I always kind of liked recycling them, they’re so useful!

I think an alternative material, that doesn’t take 1000 years to degrade, is needed for general purpose bags.
