What do you say to somebody whose dad has just died? I can’t even think how I would react to my own dying. Saying “I’m sorry” just seems too reactionary a response, you’re not sorry as you had nothing to do with the death.

The only thing you can do is support them. Anything else, just seems wrong.

I’m with Mark on this. Express support and sympathy and try not to close the subject - they may want to talk again further down the line. If you know them well enough, hug them.
It’s my flatmate and he’s not the most emotionally-open of people. I couldn’t even speak to my Grandpa when my Grandma died; he had to come to me, to talk it over
