OWL Electricity Meter

If you’re interested in what your electrical devices are costing you, then I can recommend the OWL meter, which you can buy from their site – or probably cheaper on Amazon

Once you calibrate it with your own tariffs, it will tell you what you are using and gives you a total usage. Really easy to install.

Some More Bands

To go with the Some Bands post, here are some more bands that I’m into at the moment:

Swimming in Speakers
The Antlers
The Rest
Pet Ghost Project
Allison Sattinger (folk)
Quiet Company
Beerjacket

Beerjacket join the ranks of great bands from Glasgow, like Frightened Rabbit et al.

Collage of Images

I wrote a Python script to turn all the images, in a directory, into one big collage image. The white bands are annoying – due to thumbnail size and most of my images being rectangular and not square (have since solved that problem). Here is the result of my photos from 2007 to now: view. It’s a 1MB file of about 1800 images.

Here’s another (with my code modifications done): view.

Feel free to critique my programming; it’s only my second Python script. There’s limited error-handling.

Here’s a handy one-liner (Mac OSX for me) to get all your images into one directory (I couldn’t be bothered to do recursion in my Python script):

find -iname "*.JPG" -print0 | xargs -0 -J% cp -i %

Slow Glass

Imagine if you had some glass that could slow down light. You’d be able to see into the past.

I remember a discussion on this topic, on a biology school-trip to Aberystwyth, over 18 years ago. Yes, we had imbibed.

Ah yes. Remember the post I made about a digital calendar? And now O2 have the Joggler. Under-utilised genius.

Two Years

It’s been two years (and three days) since I left Snowdrop (or Snowdrop KCS), to go on my travels. It doesn’t seem like that long ago. Some friendships have endured, others have faded – as is to be expected.

Hopefully my new venture will be up and running by the end of this, or next, month.

I might be getting somewhere with my second-hand book selling venture. I’ve got relatives searching through their attics and hopefully I’ll be able to get some stock together, to get started.

Need to get my other website set up with SSL, Paypal/Google Checkout, and get my company registered.

Prague

Had an interesting weekend away in Prague. There are some pictures on Flickr, though not many – as I didn’t have my camera with me, as was out drinking (on my own) most of the time.

I was supposed to meet up with some Travbuddy people, for the Czech Beer Festival, but they never turned up at the rendez-vouz. I went off on my own to sample the remaining beers of Prague.

It’s a beautiful city, with lots of history. If you go – make sure you go down some of the little side-streets, to find the bars down there. Not only will you evade the hordes of stag-parties – but you’ll discover some interesting people as well.

Weekend Stuff

Met up with my best friend in London on Friday and we went to see View From a Bridge, with Ken Stott, at the Duke of York Theatre. We only had standing tickets, but my friend managed to get a box, as he’s a member of Equity and knew the usher! The play was really good, though was disrupted by Ken losing his voice, just before the interval. His replacement did a fantastic job of carrying on. It built up to an emotional ending and was absorbing all the way through.

Saturday was spent at the Guiness Premiership final at Twickenham, with another good friend from college-days. Not the most exciting of games, as the teams cancelled each other out. Well done to Leicester anyway, at least they scored a try.

Other observation(s) – a lady on the tube had scars and lots of new lacerations on her forearms, so I can only assume she’s a self-harmer. Quite difficult not to look at her and wonder what she’s going through.

I’m now listening to new music on T61, after the demise of blip.fm.

Second-hand Books

I’m in the process of setting up a business (sole-trader probably) to sell second-hand non-fiction books. This’ll be run from home (once I get one), probably using Amazon Marketplace to start with, along with my own new domain.

The economy is in no fit-state to be looking for work, nor will it be for ages. I have to do something to keep my brain active.

Initially looking at scouring my local area (Pembrokeshire) for people getting rid of bulk-loads of books, either for free or for small amounts of money.

Seeing Rod Thomas

Going to see Rod Thomas, playing in Cardigan (notice the capital letter) tonight. He’ll be there with a singer called Devon Sproule.
